Waitlist Advice + Acceptance

This student ended up reaching out to me through SDN to ask about what he/she could do to show interest in a school.

Hello DentalForYoo,

First off, I want to thank you for your previous help and advice on this thread and your willingness to continue helping the applicants through this arduous process. I believe I will be headed to the waitlist after interviewing in Early February since acceptances have been given out this past Wednesday and I wanted to reach out to you and have an open ear to any helpful advice you may have for me to improve my candidacy. I feel disappointed and a bit defeated, but at the same time I feel tremendously motivated. So far, I’ve written a letter of intent, which I would like for you to read and hear your honest opinion on it if you have time, and have asked a few professors to write me additional letter of recommendations to further strengthen my case academically and professionally.

I am all ears and at this point, I am willing to do anything to be accepted to this wonderful school as it is my number one choice.

Thank you for your time and consideration and hope to hear from you soon!

Hello!

And thank you for reaching out. █████, please don’t be discouraged by any lack of acceptance as it is not a reflection of your abilities or on your credentials. Furthermore, I would say writing a letter of intent is a great idea but would urge you to hold off for at least another week. Turns out I got my acceptance a week later than everybody else last year and it truly isn’t over until you get that waitlist email. Even then, I have a lot of classmates that have gotten in off the waitlist as well! As to if they wrote a letter of intent and got in solely because of that, I am unaware. Regardless, I always urge predental students to stay proactive about their applications whether it is writing a letter or starting new extra curriculars/ classes to bump up their prerequisites.

Please be advised that I am in no way connected with WesternU admissions but will happily give your letter and edit. Have a great day!

I see. Thank you for your input! I’m definitely trying to stay positive in the meantime and figuring out other ways I can improve my credentials. What do you think about sending in a few more recommendations from a professor who’s been a mentor for me for a number of years that can speak on my character and academic capacity? I would think that would help a lot, but not totally sure. Worst case is that it doesn’t help much but can’t hurt to try. What do you think?

Hello,

Exactly. Worst case, it doesn’t help. But like you said, it doesn’t hurt to try. I feel most every dental school likes to see that their applicants are both resilient and have the academic capacity to do well in their programs. If you could get a dentist or a mentor to highlight that for you, perhaps it may help.

Great, I’m glad we can both agree on that. I’ve gotten my letter of recommendations ready and prepared to send them out, but will wait on an official email. Hopefully sometime this week they will send updates. The waiting is horrible. lol

Hello,

If you havent heard anything by now, I think it would be a good time to submit that letter.

So I’ve officially been put on the alternate list. I’m not so much disappointed at the moment because I had a strong feeling I was heading to the alternate list. I’m actually a bit happy that I didn’t receive a rejection.

By now, I have already sent in my updated letter of intent and have asked my recommenders to send in their LORs as soon as they can. If there is any other advice you may lend other than to wait patiently, please let me know! Thanks again.

Hello! Thank you for keeping me informed. Yes, it’s a really good thing that it’s not a rejection so there is still hope! I feel you’re doing everything you can right now to increase your odds of getting in. If I were to give any advice, try to show them that you’re still active within the field of dentistry. Whether that be by publishing a research paper or by volunteering at a dental clinic (Anything dental related and interesting), it should help them see that you’re going to be a great dentist even after graduating from dental school. Please let me know if you have any more questions and best of luck!
